The concept of this collection came about as a combination of a number of factors. On one hand, I have always been a person who is extremely self-conscious, afraid of what others think and how they perceive me. On the other hand, I am loud, outgoing and boisterous most of the time. I am covered in tattoos, I ride a motorcycle, and I have been told that I am funny and entertaining. The discrepancies in the way I feel on the inside and what I show on the outside is very different. I am more sensitive and vulnerable than people sometimes realize. Hence, the title of this collection is “Fragile”. I chose a floral theme throughout each series (there are 7), because flowers are not only beautiful, but strong, vibrant and healthy in the right environment. At the same time, they are extremely delicate and susceptible to harm, depending on the nurturing they receive. I wanted a series of photographs that depicted this feeling of duality that I personally experience every day.
Series: ChrysanthemumSpecial thanks to my friend, second shooter, mentee, photography student, amazing assistant, and one of the best people I know, Lesleigh Markham, who agreed to model this for me. Check out her work at Lesleigh Anne Photography.
Photography, hair, makeup, costume design: Deanna Brown
Model: Lesleigh Markham
Each of my models received 5 Beauty Edits from their session. These are altered in photoshop, but do not distort body proportions at all. There are some artistic liberties taken with lip and eye color, but the beauty edits are meant to look like the model.
Then came the fantastical! I chose my three favorite images, and created a surrealistic portrait from those. I love Halloween, Tim Burton movies and characters, and the work of the amazingly talented Kelly Robitaille (who is also Canadian!) All these factors combined is what inspired me for the creation of this series! I hope to launch a coffee table book with these images! :)
